چکیده

The effect of additions of tantalum (Ta) to a 40-30-30 cobalt (Co) -chromium (Cr) nickel (Ni) alloy has been studied for several years at the University of Michigan. Mechanical properties of a series of these alloys have been reported by Mohammed and Asgar.1 Those results showed that an alloy containing 13% Ta would have an ultimate tensile strength of 124,000 psi, a yield strength of 90,000 psi, and an elongation of 10%. There is a sharp change in these properties around 12 to 13% Ta. In the present study, this system was examined by electron diffraction, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis to identify the microstructure associated with these mechanical properties.

A new dental superalloy system. II. Mechanical properties.

Theoretical considerations that lead to the design of strong and ductile cobalt (Co)base alloys were discussed in part I of this series of articles.' It was hypothesized that the composition 40 Co-30 nickel (Ni)-30 chromium (Cr) is an acceptable compromise for the requirements of an alloy base. It also was found that tantalum (Ta) may have the qualities that are acceptable for an additional ele...

A new dental superalloy system. 3. Microstructure and phase transformations.

A microstructural study was conducted on 15 cobalt-chromium-nickel alloys of the basic composition 40 Co-30 Ni-30 Cr. The alloys were strengthened by the addition of tantalum and tantalum-rich regions were found at the interdendritic spaces. The increase in Ta concentration caused a decrease in the concentration of the a phase and an increase in the amounts of the a phase. Excessive amounts of ...

In vitro element release and biological aspects of base–metal alloys for metal-ceramic applications

Objective: The aims of this study were to investigate the release of element from, and the biological response in vitro to, cobalt-chromium alloys and other base-metal alloys used for the fabrication of metal-ceramic restorations. Material and methods: Eighteen different alloys were investigated. Nine cobalt-chromium alloys, three nickel-chromium alloys, two cobalt-chromium-iron alloys, one pal...

[Mechanical properties of metal-ceramic systems from nickel-chromium and cobalt-chromium alloys].

BACKGROUND/AIM Metal-ceramic bond strength and alloys' elastic modulus clearly determine the potential of alloy application, because the ceramic integrity during mastication depends on these two characteristics. The aim of this study was to evaluate metal-ceramic bond strenght and elastic modulus of cobalt-chromium alloys in making porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations, regarding the applicatio...

Development of new metallic alloys for biomedical applications.

New low modulus β-type titanium alloys for biomedical applications are still currently being developed. Strong and enduring β-type titanium alloy with a low Young's modulus are being investigated. A low modulus has been proved to be effective in inhibiting bone atrophy, leading to good bone remodeling in a bone fracture model in the rabbit tibia. Very recently β-type titanium alloys with a self...
